Who’s Jem Spears, Anyway?

Let’s be honest—writing romance is kind of chaotic. But for me, it’s the best kind of chaos.

I’m Jem Spears, and I write contemporary queer love stories where messy people fall for each other anyway. The kind with real stakes, real softness, and endings that make you believe things can get better—even if the world’s still on fire.

Who I Am When I’m Not Writing Kissing Scenes

I’m a queer, neurodivergent author with a Master of Professional Writing from USC, three poetry collections, one historical nonfiction translation, and a lifelong obsession with storytelling in all its forms.

My work pulls from fanfiction roots, endless writing workshops and seminars (with legends like KJ Charles, NK Jemisin, and Nino Cipri), and a deeply held belief that queer people deserve more than survival—we deserve love, community, and endings that don’t suck.

What I Write (and Why)

Too many queer stories have ended in tragedy or been edited out entirely. I write romances that push back—where love, justice, and joy aren’t just possible, they’re inevitable (with a little work, a lot of heart, and maybe a stolen monkey).

My debut trilogy is on its way. It follows three best friends as they stumble into love in wildly unexpected ways—like mid-panic attack, or on a mission to break into a research lab, or across the world in Auckland. It’s chaotic. It’s queer. And it’s coming soon.

Love is resistance. Joy is real. Found family is forever.
